Keeping up with your best friend’s activity is now as simple as checking into the dog park. The Whistle canine activity tracker sits unobtrusively around Fido’s collar, syncing data about walks, playtime, exercise, and rest to your smartphone to keep you connected with your pet.
Why We Love It
If dog owners wish for one thing, it’s more time with their best friends. The creators of Whistle Labs found a way to be as connected as possible to pets, despite not being home throughout the day. The Whistle canine activity tracker puts a leash around the Internet of Things and delivers data about your dog’s day straight to your smartphone.
The Whistle is a compact, lightweight device that lives unobtrusively at your dog’s neck. Roughly the size of a poker chip and about two times the depth, the device has a single button that engages an LED light as it establishes a Bluetooth 4.0 (dual Classic and Low) or WiFi connection. The Whistle’s primary sensor is a three-axis accelerometer which tracks all your dog’s movements, similar to a human fitness monitor. Whistle sits in a small, plastic holster that allows for easy removal, and the holster is easily affixed to your dog’s collar by a rubber strap. Whistle has an internal battery that is charged using a USB-enabled base (included with purchase), and a fully-charged battery can last over 5 days. Whistle is waterproof and, more importantly, dog proof, able to withstand any of your hound’s rough-and-tumble activities while tracking them.
To get started with Whistle, download the free Whistle app for iOS (Android app will be available this spring) and link to the device via Bluetooth. After setting up Whistle on your phone, link to your home Wifi network – this added layer of connectivity ensures you’re always tracking your dog, even when you’re out; the data is stored and synced to the app once there is a connection again.
The Whistle app is the lynchpin between Whistle and your smartphone, available for free in the App Store. The app features Activity Graphs which give snapshots of your dog’s day, and enables users to set daily goals for their dogs to create healthy habits that stick. Whistle app will compare your dog and its fitness to others based on breed, size, and age. You can even have a Whistle report sent to you via email for average stats on the past week.
The app includes a sharing feature to post photos and special moments to loved ones. Multiple users can link to one Whistle account, ensuring every “owner” in your family is tuned into the canine action.
Why We Love It
At this point, we collect enough data on ourselves – it’s time to track the dogs. We have a lot of them running around the Grand St. office, too, and we know how important it is for them to get the right amount of exercise. We love the snapshot of health Whistle is able to provide, and the data is engrossing even for those who don’t own a dog. The app is simple to use and we’re excited about forthcoming updates, such as new navigation, additional daily graph details, and the ability to add your own highlights by personally classifying the time you spend with your dog.
Trusting your four-legged friends are as active as they should be can be hard when you’re not around the house 24/7. We love how easy it now is to keep tabs on activity levels and be completely aware of what they’re up to. The level of attachment that’s cultivated through Whistle connectivity is enough to make anyone feel warm and fuzzy inside. Rather than a camera on your dog at all times – which is admittedly a bit much – the Whistle makes you feel like you’re in touch, unobtrusively. Similar to how a human fitness tracker encourages better behavior, Whistle encourages us to be better owners.
