Why We Love It
In case the name didn’t tip you off, the Wallet TrackR was specifically designed to address a necessary component of your daily life that can sometimes be hard to keep tabs on. Others are great for clipping to your keychain (we featured the Hone keyfinder on Grand St. and are still very much loving it’s open-source goodness) or strapping to your TV remote, but TrackR - at about the width of a few credit cards stacked together - is the only one that fits comfortably in your wallet. That means you don’t have to go digging through every pair of pants, every bag or purse, every couch or chair the next time yours goes missing. Just whip out your phone and the TrackR app will let you know by its handy “cold, hot, hotter” system how nearby your wallet is. Still can’t find it? Press a button and TrackR will let out a series of beeps from under that throw blanket or stack of magazines.
So far so good, but TrackR has a few other features that really set it apart from its competitors. Like, what if you lose your phone? With TrackR, you can reach into your wallet or grab your keys and press the little button on its face to actually activate an alarm on your phone, even in silent mode! To do this, the TrackR app runs constantly in the background of your phones systems, which is something Android handles naturally and iOS 7 has significantly improved functionality of since previous versions. The app also uses Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy tech to communicate with your TrackRs (make sure your Android/iOS device support BLE), all of which helps conserve the life of its two button-cell watch batteries, which last for months with no need to plug in or recharge, and are easily replaceable.
TrackR also offers customizable separation alarm features, so if you’re prone to walking outside without something, you can attach a TrackR to it and have your phone beep at you when it gets out of range. If you do forget it, the TrackR app will pin its last known location to a map so you can figure out if you left your wallet at home, the office, or the bar. You could also throw a TrackR in your glovebox and use the map to keep track of where you’re parked.
Note: The Wallet TrackR is 2 5/8" L / 1 3/4" W / 1/8" T. It weighs about 1 ounce with batteries inside.
Why We Love It
The Wallet TrackR’s form factor is pretty darn impressive, and so is the list of features they’ve packed into this little card. But we’re most impressed by their attention to detail. It’s the little things that make this a fully realized product that we’re happy to feature. For example, the reverse-locator button on the TrackR itself is perfectly recessed to avoid accidents, like butt dialing your own phone. When you do need it, TrackR lets you choose from within the app which song from your music library you'd like to play, instead of emitting some default car alarm tone. And when you press it, that song only goes off as long as you hold down the button, so you don’t need to hit it repeatedly to locate your phone or stand there with phone in hand waiting for it to stop.
The range alarm is another feature that might be incredibly useful to some, though maybe not others. But it’s totally customizable, so you can turn it on for only some devices, and even set the degree to which it will try to alert you of a separation. So, say you have an alarm set so you don’t forget your wallet, but you also leave it behind every morning when you go for a jog, you could have your phone just beep once or twice at you. But your keys could beep 5 or 10 times so you don’t get locked out in the cold. Pretty cool.
The Phone Halo team is also at work on a Button TrackR, which offers the same functionality in another form factor (about the size of four dimes stacked together) that will integrate nicely with whatever TrackR system you set up for yourself. We’ll let you know when it’s ready!
