The Waka Waka Power is the second product in the Waka Waka family that we have featured on Grand St. The first version, an inexpensive yet powerful and rugged solar lantern, was a runaway success and so we were pumped to hear that there was a second version in the works. The creators took all the feedback from the original and used that to design an even better version of what was already an amazing product.
The Waka Waka Power is a remarkable solar-powered charger and light. This version, which raised nearly $500K on Kickstarter, incorporates a 2200mAh lithium polymer battery-backup that can charge devices that require less than 1 amp (most smartphones and tablets), along with the same solar light that made the first one so awesome. While you can charge the Waka Waka Power exclusively using sunlight in 8 hours, you can also charge it using a micro-USB cable which allows you to juice up in half the time.
About the size of a small Moleskine notebook, the Waka Waka Power is impressively designed and built to take a beating. There are many smart components baked into the design: you can mount the light on a bottle or hang it from the ceiling, the base locks in place when you rotate it, and it’s compact enough to fit in your back pocket. Due to the exposed USB ports, it’s not 100% waterproof, but it doesn’t mind a light splash in the rain. The case is made of rugged plastic and the solar panels on the front absorb sunlight in even the most sun-deprived cities. You can even charge it indoors on a window sill. On an 8-hour solar charge, you can get up to 100 hours of light on low power, 40 hours on medium, and 20+ hours on high. It even has a smart SOS mode that can be quickly enabled by just holding the button down for a couple seconds. Most importantly though, the Waka Waka Power is hands-down the most efficient solar-powered battery backup, achieving 23% efficiency, which is incredibly high for solar, and it’s about twice as efficient as comparable products.
Another stellar feature of this new version is the set of indicator lights on the side. The LED indicators tell you when it’s charging, how full the battery is, and when your smartphone or tablet is getting charged.
The award-winning family of Waka Waka Lights is both durable and elegant - designed to put up with nearly anything and still shine bright. Yet, what’s great about the Waka Waka Power is that it’s not only for emergency/outdoor scenarios, it’s great as an everyday backup power source and reading light.
The social mission that drives Waka Waka Power is baked into many facets of the product including its design, manufacturing process, and revenues. Smart component choices like the highly efficient LEDs and solar cells reflect the desire to create a sustainable and eco-friendly device. For the manufacturing process, the product reached such an impressive stretch goal on Kickstarter, they were also able to move their assembly line to Haiti and every unit was assembled there.
Why We Love It
We are so excited to be taking part in the launch of the Waka Waka Power and have been anticipating its arrival since we heard it was in the works. It’s everything we love about creative technology - great design and a clear purpose, technologically impressive and energy efficient, all wrapped up in a social mission that we are thrilled to support.
The makers of the Waka Waka Power have tackled a very real problem in an extremely elegant and thoughtful way. You get light for everything from reading to walking at night and you get a way to charge USB devices. By using advances in solar technology and great industrial design, the Waka Waka Power is first light/charger combo on the market that we can confidently say is amazing. Because you don’t have to plug it in if you don’t want to, you can be as far off the grid as you like. It’s so beautiful, however, that you will probably want to use it in your home as well.
