Take the Cloud out of the data center and into a little box in your home. Space Monkey delivers 1 Full Terabyte for all your data storage, access, and encryption. Works with OS X, iOS, Android, Windows, and the web.
Grand St. Says
1TB of online storage, accessible from anywhere, anytime
Anywhere. Desktop (Mac & Windows), Mobile (iOS & Android), and Web access to all your files
Big. Adds 1TB of storage to all devices you connect
Safe. Protects your files through the Space Monkey storage network -- everything is remotely backed-up and remains safe even if your own device fails or is destroyed.
Price includes 1 year of network service. After 1 year, you can choose to renew for $49/yr.
The Space Monkey device makes all the magic possible. Just plug it in and install the desktop software or mobile apps.
Since the device is on your local network, you'll experience much faster upload and download speeds than you would with a traditional cloud service — up to 30x faster.1 And because Space Monkey forms a global distributed storage network, you'll be able to access and store data from anywhere with an Internet connection, even if your own device is offline.
Mobile apps on iOS and Android both support auto-upload of photos and videos. Simply install, and all your content will get sent to Space Monkey whenever you create it. Automatically.
Mobile apps also support access to all your Space Monkey files, to view natively inside the app, to stream, or to download for use in other apps. You can also do all the things you'd expect to be able to do with your files: share, rename, move, delete — right from inside the app.
Space Monkey gives you enough space for hundreds of thousands of photos and tens of thousands of HD video clips — enough to store many years of memories created on your mobile device (along with all your other documents, music, and files).
Space Monkey Desktop clients make accessing 1TB of storage from any computer a snap. Because Space Monkey integrates deeply with your operating system, files that exist on your device or in the Space Monkey network appear as if local — even if they are actually out in the network. This means that unlike competing full-sync cloud services, you don't have to devote as much space as you have stored in the cloud on the hard drive on every computer from which you access your files. Instead, Space Monkey acts like an extra terabyte of space for any computer you install the client on.2
Of course, you can also 'pin' files and folders locally that you want to always be fully synced, for access even when you don't have a working Internet connection.
Desktop clients for Mac OSX, Windows, and Linux are available.3
All data stored to Space Monkey is encrypted at the source with keys only your personal account has access to. Data stored to the network is split up and stored to many distinct locations, making it difficult for the bad guys to get at it even if they did have access to your keys. This is in contrast to the status quo in the cloud today, where everything is stored in highly centralized data centers that are vulnerable to attack and natural disaster.
Web App: Anywhere, Anytime
Finally, when you'd like to access or upload to Space Monkey from a system that may not have a client installed, you can use the Space Monkey Web App from within any recent Internet browser.
The Web App supports native streaming of many media types already, as well as the ability to share, rename, move, delete, upload, and download files. It also provides account management for your personal details, and a mechanism to manage the files you've shared via any of the supported platforms.
Space Monkey makes it possible to access your data from anywhere, on any platform, any time.
Changing how the world stores data, forever
All of this adds up to a fundamentally new way to store, access, and share your data. Space Monkey is re-architecting how the cloud works, to bring you more efficient, faster, cheaper, bigger, more durable, and more sustainable storage. You're not only getting a better online storage service with Space Monkey, you're also helping the planet.
As measured with internal tests at Space Monkey. Your results may vary. Note that Space Monkey desktop clients do require some local cache disk space for staging data to upload and for performance during access. This is configurable by the user, and can be much smaller than the amount needed for full sync (1TB) OSX and Windows fully supported, Linux client currently in limited availability.
Why We Love It
When we think about all the photos and videos we’ve generated over the last few years, we’re quick to realize that our digital data is all over the place: in services like Dropbox and iCloud, hard drives and USBs, and even offline. If we could, we’d get our inner hoarder on and store all of it online. But, to store a lot of data, the Cloud isn’t cheap. For 1TB of storage, it’ll cost you about $100 -- every month, that is. The Space Monkey, by comparison, is a steal.
We love the Space Monkey because it lets us pay for what we really want: storage, and only storage. In the Cloud, you can’t purchase ‘just storage’ – you have to buy the costly fire suppression systems, diesel backup generators, expansive power distribution systems, premium network equipment, biometric access controls, and security patrols that come with keeping your data secure and safe. Because of these operational costs, the only way to make any of this affordable is to pack 1000s of users onto each server and millions of users through each Internet connection. Either through hard limits on storage amount or by throttling your upload/download speeds, this often limits how much you can actually use. In other words, slow speeds at high costs.
Still, inexpensive storage wouldn’t be enough for us if we didn’t think that our data was secure even in the case of natural disaster. We love that the durable Space Monkey storage network is designed to withstand massive, multiple, concurrent failures, and still keep what we care about most safe and available. Now, the only thing you’ll have to worry about with the weather is which beverage you’ll choose to keep you warm: hot chocolate, or tea?
