Tis the season to turn your gift-getters into upright citizens. The LUMOback monitors posture and delivers gentle reminders to improve throughout the day. Sync with an Android or iOS device to track progress, activity, and sleep habits.
Why We Love It
Sit up straight! We’re all slouchers from time to time, and as much as you know you shouldn’t, it’s just so easy to let go. Years of sitting in front of a computer aren’t helping, either. LUMOback aims to fix your bad habits, and it’s so effective that you’ll often miss LUMO (the friendly app stick-figure avatar) when you aren’t wearing it. With its new smaller design and updated apps for Android and iOS, the experience just got even better.
Simply buckle the LUMOback around your waist (under or over your shirt), with the sensor patch resting on the small of your back. LUMOback tracks your movement in real-time and gives you a gentle vibration if you are slouching. It’s remarkably accurate — this is the true innovation core of LUMOback. It knows when you’re standing, leaning forwards, backwards, side to side, walking, running — it even knows if you’re sleeping on your back or stomach. The technology is quite impressive and can be immediately appreciated by just watching the movements displayed in real-time by LUMO.
LUMOback will turn on and calibrate itself when you put it on and walk around for a few seconds. Unlike most app-connected devices, once you setup LUMOback, all settings and data are cached on the LUMOback locally. That means that it can function autonomously, even if you leave your phone behind. Once it’s within range of your phone, all of the day’s data uploads, allowing you to graphically analyze the time you spent slouching, standing, and even the total steps you took during the day (yes, it’s also a pedometer — great for tracking your daily activity levels). And, thanks to a great implementation of Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy, the micro-USB rechargeable battery is good for up to four days of tracking.
LUMOback received tremendous support during their June 2012 Kickstarter campaign, hitting a chord very popular with the computer generation. It’s available for both Android and iOS users, though for iOS devices, it’s only compatible with the newest generations, such as the iPhone 4s and 5/5s/5c, iPad 3&4 and iPod Touch 5. LUMOback comes in two sizes, one for waist sizes 19-38in, and a larger version for waists 25-53in. Built by a small team from the ground up, the LUMOback is a refreshing reminder that technology can positively impact your health. It's no secret that developing good posture is easier said than done. Knowing you’re going to be paying down the road for all that slouching is a scary thought. LUMOback gives us one less excuse. Not only is it fun (in a strange way) to use, it’s extremely effective and easy to incorporate into your daily routine. Once you’ve configured LUMOback once, just strap the sensor around your lower back each morning and you’ll be on your way to better posture. Even after just one day’s use, you’ll notice yourself sitting and standing straighter, and feeling more confident.
At Grand St., we work long hours writing code and content, and with those hours comes lots and lots of slouching. There’s nothing worse than having a sore back at the end of the day, and it’s even worse knowing that you can prevent it. We’re big believers in LUMOback because it solves a really silly problem in a really simple way. If you spend significant amounts of time sitting at a desk, this may just be the perfect tool for you. Beyond the posture correction, the step counter is a great way to keep tabs on your daily activity. Try creating daily step goals to ensure you’re not staying chained to the desk for too long. Your back will absolutely thank you.
