The just-launched Lapka is a set of four different environmental sensors. The sensors interact with an app on your phone that educates you about your environment. Made of soft wood and plastic, the sensors are light and beautifully designed. Own one of the very first sets.

The Lapka allows you to have a new level of awareness about the environment around you. Through the set of four sensors, you can track humidity, determine whether raw foods are organic, measure radiation levels, and see electromagnetic fields, all on the fly.
The Lapka is perhaps one of the best examples of a new type of device that uses smartphone software to make a vast improvement over an existing tool, and it is very rare that we see a product that completely reinvents a product in the same way that the Lapka has done. After you download the app, you can access the sensor readings immediately and keep track of them via the app.
The Lapka is also one of the most interesting new examples of a product that uses the headphone jack in a creative and relevant way. Like the new batch of credit card readers, the Lapka showed us that the headphone jack really is a gateway to product creativity.
Check out this video made by Lapka and you'll understand why we are so enamored with it.
The most intriguing and unique part of the Lapka is the accompanying free iphone app. It is what makes the Lapka different from traditional devices like this - the learning element. Through the app, you can track and learn about your environment. In this sense, it is not just an environmental tool but a health tool as well. The data around you is “unlocked” via the app, creating a greater sense of awareness about environmental factors like humidity, radiation and food content.
The Lapka is a gorgeously designed set of four sensors constructed out of wood and lightweight plastic. You access each sensor via the headphone jack on your iPhone. The device leverages the phone's power supply, processor, and screen, so building those components into the device itself was unnecessary. This is indicative of a new trend in new electronics - their ability to access parts of the phone, including the software, means the designer can focus instead around really perfecting the parts of his/her device that are unique.
Certainly in the case of the Lapka, the unique element is the look and feel of the sensors.
These particular sensors are an interesting set of capabilities to pair together - they have definitely been available previously as totally separate devices (costing together way more than $220), but haven't been combined in this manner ever before (that we have heard of, at least). That's part of what makes the Lapka so cool - the different functionalities of each sensor and the way they work together to give you a complete picture of your environment.
There are four different sensors that together make up the Lapka. They are:
Humidity and Temperature - Measures the humidity and temperature. Helps you understand the relative humidity of your environment.
Organic - Tests the nitrate content in your food to give you an idea of how "organic" it is.
EMF - Detects electromagnetic fields (EMF) in your environment.
Radiation - Can check levels of radiation in your surroundings. Very precise.
