This state-of-the-art plant sensor is Wi-Fi enabled and allows plant owners to get up to date details from their plants directly to the web or an iOS device. Forget sobbing about the chrysanthemums this spring. Those days are over.
Why We Love It
The Koubachi is a beautiful device that sits in your plant’s soil, intelligently absorbing all the plant vibes in order to educate you about how your plant is doing. The 2012 Red Dot Design Award winner has sleek rounded lines and futuristic looking soft bevels. The physical design is clean and minimalist, which makes it great at blending in with any style plant or potter. The bulbous head is only the size of your palm, yet it houses a light intensity sensor, a temperature sensor, a humidity sensor, a Wi-Fi radio, and two AA batteries (included).
The Koubachi has an eight inch metal stem connected to the bulb to be rooted near the plant it is monitoring. The Koubachi uses a unique Plant Care Engine (PCE) designed at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology to measure, analyze and display individual care plans for each plant. The Koubachi's plant-like appearance is no mistake. It's designed to experience exactly what your plant goes through. It wakes up periodically to measure your plant's vitals and can be told to take a quick measurement by hitting the button on the top. Its smart power sipping technology allows it to run for over one whole year on two AA batteries.
Choose whether you'd like the Indoor or Outdoor version to suit your needs. The Outdoor version is IP4X certified so you don't need to worry about it in a rough environment. Each Koubachi can measure multiple plants simultaneously, you just need to tell it when you move the sensor. Getting started is extremely simple: plug in the batteries, log into my.koubachi and follow the quick steps to associate the sensor to your home wireless network, and then place the Koubachi in your favorite plant.
One of the best features of the Koubachi is its accompanying set of apps available on the web or on iOS devices. The folks at Koubachi created a cloud platform integrating their Plant Care Engine that allows a user to gather useful feedback from their plants and then read detailed instructions on how to help it grow better. Tailored to your specified plant species and using the onboard sensors, you'll get optional notifications when your plant needs water, if it's not getting the appropriate amount of sunlight or nutrients, and if the temperature and humidity are uncomfortable.
Why We Love It
In short, the Koubachi is not only about helping us keep our plants alive, which it does quite well, it is about using specific data and feedback to easily learn how to care for our plant species. The designers aptly say “give your plant a voice”, and we agree wholeheartedly.
Like most tech-obsessed gadgeteurs, we revel at anything that promises to make something esoteric open and easy. The Koubachi does exactly that. We’ve aspired to grow even the simplest plants in the past and failed miserably. Rather than continue to try and beat our heads into brick walls, we had resorted to either giving up or simply buying a new $50 plant every couple of months from Home Depot. Our plant graveyard is sad.
We love the Koubachi because it has that kind of subtle hand holding you secretly want from a lifestyle gadget, without making you feel dumb for needing it. In fact, the Koubachi has a learning process that makes you feel great using it. When you set up the device in a plant species you love, the app alerts and information help you learn more and more about how to treat your plant. This sort of “learn by doing” experience is extremely fulfilling and we see ourselves eventually having an intimate knowledge of our current plant species, and using Koubachi to become an expert in new plant species.
