Prepare for upcoming holiday photo-ops with Eye-Fi—the genius SD card with embedded WiFi connectivity. Snap pics at the office holiday party and they’ll appear on all your devices faster than you can say “NSFW.”
Why We Love It
Eye-Fi’s latest Pro X2 16GB card is one of the coolest gadgets available today, and truly a must own for any camera geek. In fact, it’s a must own if you’re considering the Doxie One. Don’t just ditch the paper trail, plug in the Eye-Fi card to the Doxie One and go completely wireless.
The Eye-Fi looks just like any normal SD card, but insert it into any of the
compatible camera models, and you will be able to wirelessly upload all of your pictures (JPEG and RAW) and videos to your computer, tablet, or smartphone. It will even allow you to selectively send pictures or videos to 25 of your favorite online service such as Facebook, Flickr, Picassa, YouTube, or even a personal FTP server.
For anyone who has seen the power of Geotagged pictures (check out http://www.flickr.com/map/), you’ve probably been disappointed that most cameras don’t have a built in GPS like your smartphone. The Eye-Fi can determine its location based on nearby wireless networks and add this info to your photos. It’s not GPS, but it works well in areas where there are lots of WiFi networks. And if for some reason 16GB isn’t enough for you, the “Endless Memory” feature will automatically free up space on the Eye-Fi once photos have been safely transferred off of the card.
Setting the Eye-Fi up is straightforward but very configurable. You’ll first plug the Eye-Fi into your computer and decide which private WiFi networks the card should connect to. You can even tell it to hop on open WiFi networks it sees while you are out snapping pictures. By far one of the best features is the Eye-Fi’s ability to broadcast its own WiFi in its “Direct Mode” that allows you to connect to the card regardless of being near any known WiFi networks. All of the fun capabilities of smartphone cameras, like being able to immediately send pictures over email, maybe even making a couple of quick edits before posting to Flickr, become instantly available to any camera, even big professional DSLRs where wireless transfer functionality is typically several hundred dollars.
The 16GB card is the latest version of the Eye-Fi Pro X2 series, and is their top of the line card. It offers Class 10 write speeds of 22MB/s and 802.11n connectivity for fast wireless transfers. The Eye-Fi Center application is compatible with Mac and Windows computers, and there are official and 3rd party applications for both iOS and Android devices.
Why We Love It
Looking at storage capacity these days is truly incredible. We all remember the days when installing the latest game meant inserting 10 Floppy disks one after the other. Consider that was only 14.4MB, a number outweighed by a single picture from today’s digital cameras. We’ve also reached the point of creating a format that is truly at the limit of practical usability. We can’t tell you how many MicroSD cards have been lost in the pocket of a pair of old pants.
However, there was still room for innovation in the flash drive industry, and when Eye-Fi first debuted their technology, people were amazed. Rightfully so. Somehow they managed to wedge an embedded computer inside an SD card, with the promise of never having to manually upload pictures again. The power of the Eye-Fi is not only in its technical achievement, which is considerable, but in its usability. Eye-Fi has been constantly refining their code and adding useful features, making this device an obvious choice for any camera user.
Who doesn’t love photobooths? That was exactly our feeling when we were discussing plans for an end of summer party a few months ago. With the help of an Eye-Fi card and custom integration with Google+ Party Mode, we built, if we do say for ourselves, one of the coolest photobooths ever created.
