Egg Minder is an app-enabled tray that wirelessly monitors the status of eggs in your fridge. “Mind” it or not, the idea at work here - that technology can help you manage the day-to-day minutiae - is super cool. It’s part of Quirky + GE’s Wink line—a stable of housewares that can be connected, controlled, calibrated, and automated by one app on your mobile device. Who wants a glass of smart egg nog?
Why We Love It
At the start of their partnership last May, Quirky + GE challenged everyday people to dream up a line of products that syncs with smartphones, unlocking a level of functionality and convenience that just isn’t possible with your run-of-the-mill household objects. Imagine wirelessly controlling lighting, monitoring food quality, and receiving real-time interior climate info—all within one easy-to-use mobile app. All that and more is now a reality with Wink: Instantly Connected.
Rather than starting with a huge open-ended home automation/Internet of Things platform geared toward the technically savvy, Quirky took a different direction and started with small but well-focused, targeted products. Quirky is a master of getting products to market from ideation faster than just about anyone out there, but the cloud-connected nature of the Wink lineup was something new for them. How’d they pull it off? They took advantage of our favorite cloud enabler, the Electric Imp.
Each of the five Wink devices have an Electric Imp built in, but you’d be hard pressed to tell outside of the Imp’s awesome yet simple BlinkUp WiFi configuration process. Knowing that Wink is built on top of Electric Imp is a big deal for us at Grand St. Electric Imp is one of the most open and forward thinking hardware-cloud platforms out there, and we are extremely excited to see where their partnership goes. From future IFTTT integration to dozens of more Wink compatible devices, we’re just getting started.
Picture yourself inside a futuristic kitchen straight from the set of a sci-fi movie. Open the space-age refrigerator and take a look inside. In place of your average egg carton, you’ll probably see something that looks a lot like Egg Minder. Luckily, it’s available right here in the present, and it’s ready to count and monitor those most essential of culinary cornerstones—eggs!
Here’s what’s crackin’: You’ll download the Wink app to your mobile device and then sync it to your Egg Minder by following the on-screen prompts. Then, you’ll load up to 14 fresh eggs into the plastic carrier, replace the clear acrylic lid, and pop it in the fridge. When you need an egg, remove the lid and Egg Minder’s LED indicators will let you know which egg is oldest. Meanwhile, the Wink app will keep track of the number of eggs you have left, and which are about to go bad. You can access this info from anywhere, so you’ll never be left guessing when you’re out food shopping. Enable push notifications and your phone will alert you when it’s almost time to make a trip to the market (or the henhouse).
Egg Minder is minimalistic when it comes to power consumption. There’s no charging cradle or AC adapter to deal with here—it runs on two AA batteries and, once switched on, will automatically go into sleep mode when not in use. This no-stress functionality goes a long way in assuring the convenience and utility of this unique kitchen tool.
Why We Love It
It may seem like a one-trick pony, but Egg Minder will save you loads of stress in the kitchen. Even casual cooks know how often eggs are used in recipes—and how frustrating it is when you don’t have enough when it’s time to start cooking. Of all your fridge items, we argue that eggs are the ones that should be minded most.
For more serious food artistes (which some of us claim to be), egg freshness really matters. Of course health and taste are a concern when dealing with really questionable eggs, but even borderline decent ones can muck up an otherwise beautiful meal. Did you know that unfresh eggs will be less likely to maintain their shape in a pan, making omelette preparation a huge pain? For the love of breakfast, let Egg Minder show you the way to a tastier tomorrow.
