Building a robot is now as simple as stacking the dishes thanks to Cubelets, magnetic blocks that snap together to create real, live robots. Each Cubelet responds to light, motion, and other elements, giving you freedom to build your very own robot, no programming required.
Why We Love It
Ever wish you could build something besides a career? Now you can, and there’s no need to speak a programming language. Cubelets do for robotics what Grand St. feature littleBits did for modules – with no credentials except a desire to make something cool, these kits turn anyone into a creator.
Cubelets are exactly what they sound like. These magnetic cubes snap together in different combinations to create robotic prototypes. Cubelets are indeed their own individual robots – to know how they work individually is to know how they work together. Cubelets are divided into 3 categories: Action, Sense, and Think. Action Cubelets do things, such as move using an embedded motor, or emit LED flashlight. Sense Cubelets process inputs, including the amount of surrounding ambient light or detecting how far they are from another object. Think Cubelets perform logic functions, providing battery power or acting as a passive bridge between 2 other Cubelets.
The KT06 Kit is comprised of 6 Cubelets that span across Action, Sense, and Think. You’ll receive 1 each of Drive and Flashlight, Brightness and Distance, and Battery and Passive Cubelets. Getting started is incredibly simple. For example, by snapping together a Distance, a Drive, and a Battery, you can create a robotic critter that moves away from objects through sensory input and a motor.
This example configuration is only the beginning. In addition to the KT06 Kit, we are also selling Bluetooth, Rotate, Knob, and Drive Cubelets individually. Bluetooth allows users to program Cubelets from a mobile app, Rotate spins at a rate according to the block’s input values, and when snapped on, Knob can control the speed at which Cubelets move. The more Cubelets you add to your toolkit, the more functions your robots are able to carry out.
The KT06 includes batteries and we’re bundling the kit with a charger. The charger can power up both batteries at once and takes ~90 minutes to reach a full charge.
Why We Love It
The lore surrounding robots includes visions of circuit boards and other things most of us know nothing about. That’s why we love Cubelets. They make an inventor out of anybody, from curious children to kidults who simply want to build something. The Grand St. office and its visitors can’t get enough of these. We lost track of the times someone walked by a stack of Cubelets, started playing with them, and commented on how cool they are. It may sound crazy at first, but it’s true that anyone can create a robot with this kit.
Cubelets are incredibly self-referential, another reason we think these little friends are great. Each Cubelet is its own mini-robot – the blocks aren’t programmable, and we like it that way. By knowing each Cubelet individually, we know what they can do together. Cubelets are really robots made out of robots; if you need us, we’ll be here trying to wrap our heads around that one.
