It seems smartphone users can never have enough charging cables, so help them out this holiday by gifting the ChargeCard. This slim accessory slips right out of a wallet, revealing a short USB charger.
Why We Love It
Ever need to charge your phone or tablet and there just isn’t a cable around? The team at the ChargeCard Project had this problem and decided to do something about it. Kickstarted in August 2012, the ChargeCard is a small, portable, and lightweight USB charging cable that comes in micro-USB, Lighting and iOS 30-Pin (iPhone 4, first/second generation iPads, any Apple device before the iPhone 5) versions. Scarcely thicker than a couple credit card and identical in width and height, it’s the perfect wallet/purse companion.
For the technical folks out there: the ChargeCard starts with flexible wires printed in Santa Ana, California, and injection-molded black ABS plastic clamshells manufactured in Anaheim, California. To bring the two together, the shells are sealed using ultrasonic welding - a process that applies 50 psi of pressure to each side and uses ultra-high-frequency vibrations to shake the edges for 1.025 seconds - completely fusing everything together with mechanical energy. The final injection mold adds a thermoplastic elastomer, a mixture of mostly plastic and some rubber. It’s a whole lot of protection for a little cable, but rightly so, to ensure a solid seal, a grippy texture, and a tough build that will last for a very long time.
Why We Love It
It’s ridiculous how easy to use and convenient the ChargeCard is. It’s light, small, portable, durable, and even made to work with devices enclosed within larger cases. And while it doesn't have a built-in battery (maybe one day...), it works with USB plugs found everywhere: TVs, laptops, cable boxes, gaming consoles, stereos, battery backups, etc. It’s hard to notice the ChargeCard in your wallet, purse or pocket. Snapping it in and out and using it is a breeze. No more fumbling with tangled cables on the go. The ChargeCard is equal parts relief, rock-solid design, and plain old convenience. Oh, and did we mention, it's the perfect companion to the CardNinja.
