A fine holiday gift for mobile gamers or fitness savvy tech heads, Bowblade joins with a smartphone to create Augmented Reality and motion-sensitive gaming that provides an upper body workout.
Why We Love It
Augmented Reality (or “AR” for short) is a live display of your environment powered by a camera, augmented with computer-generated effects like graphics, sound, or relevant data based on your location. If you’ve ever used Google Goggles or Yelp’s Monocle, you’re already family with the concept, but when it’s applied to gaming, it creates an incredibly immersive world that rivals some of the best VR technologies out there. Bowblade makes use of AR and motion-sensitive games - games that respond to movement of your phone as a way to control action within the game- to provide a fun instrument for playing over 50 games on Android and iOS smartphones. It even works with Apple TV and Wii and Roku controllers for big screen console-like gaming. Check out Bow Active's video of the original Bowblade in action. Note that we're offering the new updated Gamer Model.
Unlike the gun-style gaming devices on the market today, Bowblade isn’t about gaming for gaming’s sake. This is really about gaming as a vehicle for a pretty serious workout. Its inventor, Dr. Ron Green, is an ex-stuntman, gamer, and chiropractor who saw the potential in AR shooting games to help people get physical and healthy. Archery is a low-intensity workout that activates tons of different muscles in your hands, wrists, forearms, upper arms, shoulders, chest and back to burn significant calories, build strength, and tone. The Bowblade offers 12-17 lbs. of resistance - less than a real bow, but perfect for a sustained workout. And, trust us, you’ll feel it!
Mount your phone with the simple adjustable mechanical clip, launch your app, and you’re ready to shoot! The Bowblade can be fired just like a regular bow by extending your grip hand and pulling squarely back with your draw hand. The trigger attachment relies on a “stylus” that strikes the “fire” button on-screen. When mounting your phone on the Bowblade, be sure that the stylus lines up with the “fire” button to ensure solid shooting. It even lets you shoot your bow semi-automatically without releasing the bow so you can fire rapidly and maintain that strength-building tension. And it works the same in either hand without grip switching or re-stringing, so lefties and righties can work out on both sides with one device.
Note: We’re offering the Bowblade in three sizes that correspond with the user’s height: Small: 4'10"- 5'4" , Medium: 5'5"-5'10" and Large: 5"11"-6'3".
Why We Love It
Sitting on the couch tapping a screen isn’t a shooting game. Running through the woods with a Bowblade in your hands, taking cover behind a tree and peeking out to unleash a quiver of digital arrows on your target: that’s a shooting game. Want a quick workout from the living room or office? We think you’ll be impressed to find how quickly you feel the effects from just a few minutes of play. Try alternating your shooting hand between left and right to ensure that both sides of your body are equally exercised.
The Bowblade’s simple mount and triggering system means it can interact with dozens of games already available in the App Store and Google Play. We tested some out around the office and handpicked a few favorites:
Hasbro Lazer Tag – Fun, challenging, and a good demo of AR for friends. (iOS only)
Turkey Blast – Just pure fun. It uses tilt controls which are more difficult, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll have Thanksgiving dinner dreams for days. (for Android and iOS)
Sniper Shooter – Highly precise (and inverted) controls, but really good for maintaining a steady shot and toning muscles. (Android only)
Spinning in circles shooting drones out of the sky with our Bowblade might have made us look a little silly to everyone else trying to get work done at Grand St. HQ, but it’s an intensely gratifying experience to be up, moving around and playing these games. Once the naysayers tried it they were immediately converted. They were also impressed by how much resistance the Bowblade put up. This is a perfect product for getting kids up off the couch or getting yourself into a fun upper body routine. Just promise us you won’t take your Bowblade downtown where you might scare up trouble :)
